Sam and I had a long discussion about the scope of the analysis software. The database contains over 20,000 companies from the US, Canada, the UK, Australia and mainland Europe. The data is sourced from Morningstar which for US companies or foreign registered companies is reasonable. For others then the data is sketchy at best. So we have decided to:

  1. Reduce the scope of the application to US registered dividend champions – perhaps about 1,000 companies
  2. Change the data source from Morningstar to the SEC free and open access data.

The problem or rather challenge with the SEC data is that it is in XBRL. I will spend time this weekend looking at XBRL and trying to see how to implement the data parsing or see whether or not a java api exists.
